Ditch the Green Screen: Installing Bria's Real‑Time Background Removal for OBS
Bria ai

A step-by-step guide to the Bria V-RMBG 3.0 OBS Plugin — from system requirements to your first background-free stream.
If you stream, broadcast, or record on OBS Studio, your background just became optional.
The Bria V-RMBG 3.0 OBS Plugin drops a native Effect Filter into OBS that removes your background in real time, frame by frame, with no green screen and no local GPU required. Everything runs through Bria's cloud inference endpoint, so your scene comes back clean no matter what's actually behind you.
Below is everything you need: what the plugin does, what your system needs to run it, and the exact installation steps for Windows and macOS.
What the plugin does
The Bria V-RMBG 3.0 OBS Plugin adds a native Effect Filter to OBS Studio that removes your video background in real time using Bria's V-RMBG 3.0 model. Your webcam frames are streamed to Bria's inference endpoint, returned background-removed, and rendered directly into your OBS scene, no green screen, no local GPU processing required.
Key features
Real-time background removal – live video processed frame-by-frame via Bria's streaming endpoint
Non-binary alpha edges – soft, natural cutouts instead of hard masks; hair and fine details blend smoothly
Native OBS filter – integrates as a standard Effect Filter on any camera source
Requirements
Before you install, make sure your setup checks these boxes:
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10/11 (x64) · macOS 12+ (arm64 and x86_64) |
| Internet connection | Required: frames are processed in Bria's cloud in real time |
Installation
Pick the walkthrough for your OS. Both take just a few minutes.
Windows
Download the .zip from the Releases page.
Extract the ZIP and locate the obs-backgroundremoval folder inside.
Copy it into C:\ProgramData\obs-studio\plugins\ (create the plugins folder if it doesn't exist).
Restart OBS Studio.
Running into trouble? If the approach above isn't working for you, try this instead:
Extract the zip file: you'll get 2 folders: bin and data
Copy the DLL file from bin\64bit into obs-studio\bin\64bit and into obs-studio\obs-plugins\64bit
Copy the data folder content (not the folder, the content itself) into obs-studio\data\obs-plugins\bria-obs-backgroundremoval-windowsOS
Restart OBS Studio
Note: if the obs-plugins or bria-obs-backgroundremoval-windowsOS folders don't exist, create them.
Updating from a previous version? The ZIP includes remove-old-installation.bat. Right-click → Run as administrator before copying the new files.
macOS
Download obs-backgroundremoval-3.0-macos-universal.pkg from the Releases page.
Open the .pkg file and follow the installer steps.
Restart OBS Studio.
Getting started
Installed? Here's how to get your background-free scene live.
1. Add your camera source
In the Sources panel, click + and choose Video Capture Device.
Name it, click OK, select your webcam, and click OK again.
2. Apply the Bria background removal filter
Right-click your camera source → Filters.
In the Filters window, click + under Effect Filters.
Choose Bria – Remove Background from the list.
Click OK.
3. Sign in to Bria (one time only)
In the filter panel, click Sign in with Bria.
Your browser opens – complete the login at platform.bria.ai/login.
Return to OBS. The status updates to "Signed in as [your email]."
Your camera now appears with the background removed.
One more thing: make sure you create your Bria account directly from the plugin, that's what unlocks your free trial period.
That's it, you're ready to stream, broadcast, or record without a background to worry about. Grab the latest release, browse the source, or file an issue on GitHub.
What's actually running under the hood
This plugin isn't a wrapper around an old image model — it's running V-RMBG 3.0, Bria's newest video background removal model, live. Earlier background removal (including our own V-RMBG 2.0) processed video frame-by-frame with no memory of what came before, which is why cutouts used to flicker and edges used to jitter on hair, fingers, and fast motion. V-RMBG 3.0 is autoregressive: each frame is predicted with the previous frame's output as context, so edges stay locked and stable across the whole stream instead of resetting every frame.
It's also smarter about what belongs in the shot. If you're holding a mic, sitting at a desk, or demoing a product, V-RMBG 3.0 recognizes those as part of you and keeps them in frame — no more disembodied torsos. In blind side-by-side testing against leading video background removal tools, it won 66.9% of head-to-head comparisons and ran up to 9x faster, at 26 frames per second. That's the model doing the work behind this filter, in real time, on every frame you stream.
